Men's Varsity Football Team

The men’s football team almost made history this year. Now that I come to think of it, they did. Gatorade inaugurated their Gatorade Cup consisting of thirty-two schools but only two were bilingual, Freedom and EIS. The winner of this tournament would go to Costa Rica and play against the winners of the other Central American countries. The winner would also receive an one hundred fifty thousand Lempira reward and the runner-up would receive a fifty thousand reward. The tournament consisted of one sudden death match, the winner advancing to the next round while the loser was eliminated. Freedom lost their first match with a whooping 8-0 against Franklin Roosevelt school of Puerto Cortes. EIS drew up against Perla de Ulua from El Progreso, one of the best teams of the country. Surprisingly EIS beat the Perla 2-1. No one could believe it, not even the newspaper, they wrote on their article, “One of the surprise of the matchday was the elimination of Instituto Pela de Ulua in the hands of the boys of Escuela Internacional Sampedarana,” goal scorer, Diego Rodriguez, commented “We already overcame one of the favorites, what’s next is defeat everyone who crosses our way to the top.” Next match EIS won 2-0 against the Instituto Arriaga. “EIS showed they are battle-hardened and is a serious candidate of the tournament” said the local newspaper the next day of the match. They reached quarterfinals against Pagan Lozano from Choloma. Pagan started winning 3-1 but EIS scored and the score went to 3-2. The Pagan supporters got rowdy and started insulting EIS players and their crowd. Afterwards EIS received one final goal leaving them out of the semifinals and breaking their dreams of becoming the first champions of the Gatorade Cup. After losing the match the newspaper said, “This duel was one of the most battled. In the first half the one from San Pedro dominated the game but the ones from Choloma showed once again they are one of the best teams in the tournament.” If EIS would have won the cup, the school would have been used to restore the soccer field.
